Conditions of Consent

Dear Participant,

You are invited to voluntarily participate in the research study: Investigating Masculinity and Femininity. In this study, you will be asked to describe your perceptions about different portrayals of masculinity and femininity. In addition, you will be asked some questions about yourself. The purpose of this study is to learn more about what men and women think about various media portrayals of masculinity and femininity.

There are no known physical, psychological, economic, or social risks associated with this study. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you may withdraw from this study at any time without any consequences or penalties. You are not obliged to answer any questions that you find objectionable or which make you uncomfortable

Note: For students who are participating in research in exchange for course credit, the following will be added: As a volunteer in the Participant Pool, you will be given one bonus credit in the course Introduction to Psychology for your participation in this study. Full credit will be awarded whether you complete the study or not.

All information will be coded and stored in a secure area. Individual performance will remain confidential and will not be released to professors or in publications. Group results will be reported (e.g., conferences presentations, journal articles) and if specific examples are used, they will be done anonymously and with no identifying information attached. Rose Ricciardelli, Dr. Kimberley Clow and their research assistants will be responsible for keeping and analyzing the anonymous data files based on your responses. That being said, other researchers could request to analyze these anonymous files for other valid research purposes (e.g., for meta-analyses).

This study has been reviewed and cleared by the Research Ethics Board at UOIT (REB #07-038). The principal investigator is Rose Ricciardelli, a PhD candidate from the Department of Sociology at McMaster University.
